Oscar Turner has one expectation for himself ahead of his mixed martial arts amateur debut this Saturday at Almighty Fighting Championship 30.
Turner will make the walk for the first time and meet Mostafa Muhammed in the Barnsley Metrodome. Regardless of the result, Turner has one simple objective that will leave him satisfied on Sunday morning, and that’s to showcase to the viewers that he belongs in the cage.
Ahead of his big moment, we had the opportunity to catch up with Oscar Turner to hear his thoughts.
Interview With Oscar Turner
Oscar, you’re all set to make your MMA debut this Saturday. How are the nerves on the lead-up to fight night?
Honestly, I don’t have many nerves about the fight right now, but I think that’s due to being focused on making weight. But I know I’m only human, so I’m sure once I’m off the scales, they will start to appear. But I’m also very excited to be making my debut.
Just tell the viewers briefly about your background, journey into MMA, and why it’s a path you’ve decided to dip your feet into.
I got into MMA because a few years ago, I started working out and was enjoying that, but it was only lifting weights and occasionally some cardio. So then I decided I wanted to be able to actually defend myself if anything ever happened, not just be able to lift weights and look good. So I got into all the Bruce Lee films and wanted to learn some flashy kung fu stuff, but luckily discovered boxing and MMA through videos of Muhammad Ali and Conor McGregor. This got me to join an MMA gym my friend was already training at, and I fell in love with it from day 1.
Expectations
I imagine there are a million thoughts running through your head ahead of Saturday. That said, you can’t be too hard on yourself, given it’s your debut, but what expectations do you have for yourself?
My only expectation of myself, win, lose or draw, is to look like I belong in that cage. I want people to know this is the right sport for me and that I have a place here.
Making your debut can be a monumental moment in this mad journey. Do you expect to have a lot of friends and family supporting you in Barnsley?
Unfortunately, the location is quite a trek from where we all live, so not as many people, as I’d have liked can make it. That being said, I do have a handful of the team coming, and also my girlfriend, so I’m grateful they are all making the journey to come support.
Finally, your going to be a blank canvas for many tuning into Almighty, but give them a tease. What can they expect from you come fight night?
People can expect a good showcase of well-rounded mixed martial arts. I am not a one-dimensional fighter, and I am more than comfortable wherever this fight ends up. Enjoy the show.
