UFC lightweight fan-favourite, Paddy Pimblett, has recently voiced his apprehensions regarding his upcoming fight camp for UFC 304, where he’s set to face Bobby Green on July 27th. The Liverpool native, known affectionately as ‘The Baddy,’ has described his current training situation as potentially the “worst fight camp” of his career.
Pimblett’s last bout took place in December at UFC 296, where he secured a unanimous decision victory against Tony Ferguson, even coming close to finishing the veteran early in the fight. In contrast, Bobby Green’s most recent fight saw him dominate Jim Miller over three rounds at the milestone UFC 300 event.
Since his win over Ferguson, Pimblett has experienced significant life changes, most notably becoming a father to twins. This joyous occasion, however, has brought about some challenges as he prepares for his upcoming fight. The lack of sleep from caring for his new-borns is a significant concern for the fighter.
Paddy Pimblett Expresses Doubt on UFC 304 Prep for Bobby Green
“By the time I fight, the babies will only be 14 and a half weeks old, so that’s the annoying thing about this,” Pimblett shared with TheMacLife: “People are like ‘You need to go and stay somewhere else so you’re sleeping of a night,’ but I don’t want to miss my kids growing up.”
Pimblett is determined to be present for his children, despite the toll it might take on his training: “I don’t want to go and stay somewhere else, I want to be there with them every day and of a night. It’s going to be hard. I’ve said this to a few people, this is going to be the worst fight camp of my life, it’s going to be very hard,” he added.
Adding to his challenges, the UFC 304 fight card is scheduled for the early hours of the morning in British Summer Time. This timing is particularly inconvenient for Pimblett, as his fight against Green will likely occur around 3:00 am local time.
The Start Time for UFC 304
“I think it plays into an advantage for the fighters coming over from America. They don’t have to change nothing, lad. They just stick to the way they are whereas I’m going to have to start getting up at 3:00 am,” Pimblett explained: “Then I’ve got to get all the way to the gym at three in the morning, it’s not happening. I’ll start doing that a couple of weeks out probably. I’ll speak to coaches and ask when they recommend the best time to do it because I haven’t got a clue.”
Despite his concerns, Pimblett remains focused on the fight itself. Interestingly, he initially preferred a different opponent: “I wanted to fight Renato Moicano instead because it would’ve made for a more enjoyable lead-up to the fight,” Pimblett admitted.
The build-up to the fight has been spiced up by some fiery exchanges between Pimblett and Green. The American lightweight hasn’t minced words, labelling Pimblett a “spoiled brat” and promising to humble him in the octagon. In typical Paddy fashion, he didn’t hold back in his response.
“Bobby Green’s just a bell***. He’s a proper tool lad, he’s a proper weapon. The funniest thing is he said ‘He mentioned me,’ I didn’t mention you, you mentioned me first so then I mentioned you, you little sausage,” Pimblett retorted. “I think he’s a proper s*** human being. He’s just a proper w***** lad.”
The Challenges of Fatherhood
As the fight date approaches, it remains to be seen how Paddy Pimblett will navigate the challenges of his unconventional fight camp.
