Peter Newti is entering his Almighty Fighting Championship 29 bout with Calvin Mooney more than confident he has the ability to make it a quick night.
Almighty FC 29 is set to take place this Saturday in Barnsley, England, at the Metrodome. The event consists of professional and amateur mixed martial arts action.
Newti, who moved from Ireland to the UK, anticipates a quick night at the office on Saturday night and doesn’t see Mooney making it past the second round.
We briefly caught up with Peter Newti to talk about his move to the UK, his opponent’s skillset and his prediction ahead of fight day.
Interview with Peter Newti
Fight night is upon us. Tell us your thoughts and feelings as you close in on your first outing of 2023.
Feeling great. The camp has been quality at Manchester Top Team training with some very high-level lads.
Last year you returned to competition after a two-year break. How would you sum up your 2022?
I think a two-year break for myself was needed to understand the sport as I was only training a couple of months before my first two bouts at the IMMAF European championships & on Cage Conflict. I would say 2022 was an average year for me as I only had two fights and picked up a win & loss.
You picked up your first amateur career victory in your most recent outing. Tell the readers what that meant to you and how important it was.
Picking up my first win was great; it’s truly fulfilling when you work hard for something, and it pays off. I’m planning to have five bouts this year, going 5-0 and then turning professional at the end of the year.
Peter Newti on First Career Win
Do you feel now, leading into your fifth amateur fight, that the pressure is slightly off your shoulders after suffering a skid and finally attaining your first victory?
I honestly don’t feel pressure when it comes to fights, I understand the objective, which is to win at all costs, and once that cage door locks, if you are feeling pressured, you’re in the wrong place, in my opinion.
I believe this will be your first time travelling and competing in the UK. How did the fight come about, and what are you looking forward to most about the opportunity?
I’ve recently moved over to the UK from Ireland; this fight came about when Almighty FC contacted me about a fight against a lad called Joe Smedley, who pulled out two weeks after it was confirmed for no reason.
In Ireland, under the Straight Blast Gym branch, you have many high-level bodies at your disposal to work with. Who has helped you the most in this camp in preparation for Calvin Mooney?
My main training partners that have helped me with this camp are Will Fleury, Johnny Walker & Abraham Bably.
Talking Calvin Mooney
Your opponent Calvin Mooney made his amateur debut last year. Have you had the chance to watch that fight? What are your thoughts on your opponent’s skill set?
I’ve been looking for his bout on YouTube and can’t seem to find it. From what I’ve seen of him on his Instagram in clips, he looks shit, to be honest. That’s not to say I haven’t taken this fight seriously, but I honestly can’t see him touching me in the stand-up. He will be shooting all night to save his life until the ref has to step in.
Lastly, enlighten the UK fans on what they can expect to see from you at Almighty FC 29.
Expect violence, can’t see this lad getting past the second round.
