Two former UFC fighters go head-to-head for this year’s PFL championship at MSG this Friday. Scotlands Stevie Ray goes head-to-head with Canada’s Olivier Aubin-Mercier for a chance at one million dollars.
The two have transformed their careers in the promotion and are now pitted against each other for the biggest opportunity of their ca
Stevie Ray
After a disappointing first bout in the PFL, Stevie Ray turned his form around with two wins over one of the best to ever do it – Anthony Pettis. The second victory in August secured the Scotsman’s place in the final against another former UFC lightweight.
Ray went 7-4 during his time in the UFC. Victories over the likes of Joe Lauzon and Michael Johnson whilst in the promotion proved he had talent. Although he never quite reached his UFC potential due to injuries, he has the opportunity to do after only four fights under the PFL. After retiring for a short period of time, Ray regained his fighting spirit after a string of injuries had put them on hold.
Ray now has the opportunity to become one of the few UK fighters to become a world champion under such a large promotion, which would certainly boast what a turnaround it has been in his career.
Olivier Aubin-Mercier
The Canadian Gangster will forever be one of the UFC’s ‘what could have been’. However, inside the PFL, he has been absolutely perfect. 5-0 inside the PFL, just like his opponent, he has turned his career around. With his last two losses coming to current top 5 welterweight Gilbert Burns and currently ranked lightweight and killer Arman Tsarukyan, there are worse ways to sign off your UFC career.
With a respectable decision win over Alex Martinez in August, Aubin Mercier has the biggest opportunity of his career at the biggest stage in combat sports. A chance to go 6-0 will prove that the Canadian is one of the best lightweights out there and has truly brought back a career that many doubted upon his exit from the UFC.
Currently holding only decision wins for the PFL, Aubin-Mercier will be looking to sign off in the final with a shocking finish.
Official Prediction: Stevie Ray defeats Olivier Aubin-Mercier by round 3 submission.
