Interview With Reggie Hingston
We are fastly approaching your first outing of 2023 on April 29. Deep into preparation, I imagine. How are you feeling four weeks out, and what do the next four weeks look like for you in terms of training?
I’m feeling really good and fit for this fight. Training has been going well. We’ve been working hard for this one.
In 2022, you dropped a fight with Logan McGonigal and fought to a draw with Jasim Begg. What is your overall assessment of last year in terms of competition? Despite the results not going your way, you must be happy to just get back out there actively competing, considering the previous long-lay off.
2022 was a good year for me, staying active as possible after a long layoff. I was happy with my performances, securing some finishes against good opponents.
Before 2022, the last time we saw you was at the back end of 2019. Do you feel the break-in-between fight slightly killed your momentum, considering you were 2-0 at that point?
Yeah, I felt like after 2019, I lost a bit of momentum, was on a long layoff, and couldn’t really train, unfortunately, due to the pandemic at the time.
What are some of the biggest lessons you learned from last year?
Yeah, the biggest lesson I’ve learned is you never want to leave it in the hands of the judges, even when you think you’ve done enough.
Reggie Hingston on Rounds with Damon Donald
I see you had linked up and got some rounds in with Damon Donald ahead of April 29. What was it like to work with him and rub knowledge off on one another, given he’s one of the more experienced amateurs in the country?
Working with Damon Donald was class. We’ve linked up a couple of times now and have been getting really good rounds in with him and giving me some good advice as well. I’m looking forward to seeing him out in a few weeks.
It’s not just any ordinary fight at Goliath Fight Series 3. You will clash with Aaron Towns for the flyweight title. Firstly, how much-added motivation does that give you, and secondly, what would it mean to you to kickstart your year by attaining your first amateur title?
I’m super excited about this fight! Arron has loads of experience, so it’s going to be a good test not just for me but for him as well. The flyweight title is just the icing on the cake. I’m finally getting to go back down to my actual weight class, as I’ve been giving weight away to my last couple of fights.
Aaron has a lot of fights under his belt, which means there’s a ton of tape out there on him. What are your honest thoughts when you look at him as an opponent? Is there anything that jumps out at you?
I’ve seen Arron fight before and knew him when I made my mma debut, so I know how good he is, especially his striking. We have seen and picked up on things I can exploit.
Despite failing to pick up any real consistency as of late, Aaron is game and will show up. Do you feel his experience will play a factor in the fight?
No, it will not show any factor on the night, as we can both shut each other out. I feel I’m on a whole new level from last year.
Hingston on Aaron Towns
Aaron fought last weekend in Wales and fell short of a second-round submission to Kenzie Jones. Did you manage to catch any of that fight, and if so, do you have any thoughts?
No, I never saw his fight on cage warriors this past weekend, so I can’t comment on that fight, but it doesn’t look good coming into this fight with me, especially getting finished weeks before a title fight.
For those coming to support you and get behind you, what sort of night can they expect?
For all friends and family and sponsors that are coming to watch, this will be war, I can promise you that.
