In a recent interview, Renato Moicano stated he thinks that the UFC is protecting Paddy Pimblett and will not be giving him difficult matchups as his UFC run continues. After a brilliant post-fight speech back in November, Moicano has grown in popularity with an immediately infamous quote, ‘Moicano wants Money’.
Matchups For Moicano and Pimblett
Moicano currently sits 13th in the Lightweight rankings, whilst Pimblett is unranked. This is why people believe that Moicano would be the next step for Paddy to break into the Top 15. Moicano feels that discussing the fight is pointless as he is looking up the rankings to make the most money in big fights.
“What I want is money. The rest, it doesn’t matter. Follower doesn’t pay the bills. Being famous doesn’t pay any bill. I want to fight big, I want to fight, I’m ready. I know April’s going to have a card, maybe it’s in Miami, I hear there’s going to be a card there, Moicano wants to be there fighting a guy ranked above him and making my name in that category.”
Moicano stated in an interview with Brazilian outlet AG Fight
For Moicano, looking up the rankings, Damir Ismagulov recently announced he is looking to fight out the final fight in his UFC contract, which would make a brilliant five-round main event at a UFC Fight Night. Alternatively, if he wanted to push higher up the rankings, Mateusz Gamrot would be looking to bounce back after his decision loss to top contender Beneil Dariush. Paddy Pimblett is going to be having ankle surgery in the spring, so he may be looking at a return in the second half of 2023. He has been called out by numerous UFC Lightweights, most recently Thiago Moises at UFC 283. The landscape at Lightweight may look very different in six months’ time, but with Pimblett’s stardom, he will most certainly have plenty of options for his return.
