Robert Whittaker says that Dricus Du Plessis will be his “most dangerous fight to date.” In his UFC 290 media day interview, Whittaker made it clear that he would not be underestimating his opponent despite being a big favourite.
“That’s because he’s the one that’s unwritten,” said Whittaker. “He’s the unknown and I understand the dangers that he presents.”
Robert Whittaker Not Looking Past Du Plessis
‘The Reaper’ expressed interest in fighting at UFC 293 in Sydney, but insisted that he is not looking past Saturday. He spoke highly of his South African opponent and highlighted how dangerous he can be.
“He has nothing to lose. Everyone has already washed him. He’s the underdog in this fight and tell me something more dangerous than a man with nothing to lose,” said the Australian.
“I have trained like a madman for the last 14 weeks, and may the best man win. He’s going to get the best version of myself come the weekend,” he added.
Ready For Anyone
When asked if taking fights like this can be difficult after achieving so much in his career, Whittaker replied by saying that he takes it in his stride.
“Mate, that’s the business. If you’re not up-and-coming you’re stopping the up-and-comers aren’t you? It’s just part of the gig,” he said with a smile.
Whittaker may not be underestimating Du Plessis, but he seemed extremely confident that he’ll get past him at UFC 290. “It’s about being better than him. I’m going to try and dismantle him. I’m going to try and create holes and opportunities that I can exploit to take the win,” he said.
Consistently One Of The Best
Whittaker’s only two losses over the past nine years have been to the champion Israel Adesanya. He is a well-rounded, clever mixed martial artist who still poses a significant threat to Adesanya’s reign.
A win on Saturday should secure him another shot at the king. If it does, he may not miss next time.
