Rory Evans promises to give it everything he’s got to stop Jack Eglin this Saturday at Cage Warriors 156 in his own backyard.
Cage Warriors 156 is set to take place at Vale Sports Arena on Saturday, July 1st, in Cardiff, Wales. The event will be headlined by former Cage Warriors champion Matthew Bonner and former UFC veteran Darren Stewart. The ‘ adopted Welshman’ Reece McEwan is taking the penultimate fight of the evening, who clashes with Brazil’s Leonardo de Oliveira.
Evans enters the bout with a (5-4) record. The Welshman’s Cage Warriors return early this year didn’t go to plan when Liam Gittins snapped his four-fight win streak. Desperate to make things right, Evans is thriving at the thought of his hand being raised in his home town once again and highlights the benefits of competing in Wales:
Rory Evans on Fighting on Home Soil
“I‘m really excited to fight on home soil. As you said, it’s been a while. I can’t wait to hear the Welsh roar!! More than that, I get to sleep in my own bed and not spend three nights away from my wife and daughter, which to me, is the best thing about fighting at home.“
Team morale is vital to a great and successful camp, and Evan’s has also endured the benefits of training alongside his teammates at Shore Mixed Martial Arts, who prepare for their own battles at CW 156. Scott Pedersen and Scotland’s Reece McEwan will make the walk on Saturday night, but Evan’s also praises the amateurs on the mats who’ve been putting in the work and helping him prepare:
“The vibes have been great in the gym, especially with having a few of us on the same card. Nobody gives an inch, which is just how I like it. All the Ammy team were also out a couple of weeks ago too, so the whole team were all prepping. It worked out perfectly!“
Suffering Defeat
After suffering a recent loss to Liam Gittins, Evan’s is determined to show the fans that the performance wasn’t an accurate representation of the skills he possesses. Addressing the fight, Evan’s was surprised as any to have not shown up on fight day, but he did take the correct measures to guarantee that it doesn’t happen again:
Honestly? I don’t know what happened. I felt terrible warming up, which I kind of brushed off and thought I’d be fine once I got going, but for some reason, I just couldn’t, and I was extremely tired after 2 minutes which is not like me at all. Having an off day in the gym is fine and happens often, but on fight day, everything has to be right. So I’ve made a few alterations in training, improved S&C and made my mma sparring day as close to the fighting day as possible. So on fight day, it will just feel like another sparring day, and hopefully, I will be as relaxed and anxiety free as possible.
Jack Eglin
His opponent, Jack Eglin, comes into the fight (3-2) and, in March, catapulted himself back into the win column with a round-one stoppage victory over Illie Mery. Despite undergoing a series of losses in the past, Evan’s has taken note of his opponent’s development and improvements and expects the best version of Eglin come Saturday night:
“Jack is a great fighter who seems to have evened out his game tremendously over the last couple of years. Few ups and downs like most fighters. It’s never an easy run in this game, I suppose. But we have a game plan, and I’m more than confident that come Saturday night, we will have our hand raised.“
MMA is a sport that continuously shows its unpredictability by the week. Nobody can really know what will occur once the cage door closes. Being fully aware of that, Evans knows there are no dead curtains in this game, but one thing is for sure, he will be coming with bad intentions:
“As you know, Lewis, nobody has a clue what’s going to happen in there, especially myself. But I promise you this, ill be trying to get him out of there every second of the fight.”
