The Smashing Machine movie is adding former Bellator champion Ryan Bader to the cast.
Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson’s passion project is based on the 2002 documentary of Mark Kerr. The movie will dive back into the life of the major pioneers in MMA and all the legends around that time frame, including Mark Coleman and Igor Vovchanchyn.
With the recent tragedy that happened to Mark Coleman, it will be nice to relive a glorious moment for him once again, this time on the big screen.
The original documentary pulled back the curtain of the sport of MMA. It took a deep dive into the injuries and addiction to pain medications.
Ryan Bader Joins The Smashing Machine
The former Bellator heavyweight champion let the mixed martial arts world know he was added to the cast.
“Putting the MMA game on pause for a bit as I head to Vancouver for about three months,” Bader wrote on Instagram.
“Excited to be a part of an amazing project by Benny Safdie, The Smashing Machine. Giving ode to a couple legends of the sport, Mark Kerr, Mark Coleman. The highs and the lows that come with this crazy ass sport.”
Ryan Bader will look to put his MMA career on hold while he takes on this new adventure of being on the silver screen.
The film is directed by Benny Safdie with independent studio A24 producing and will be released sometime in 2025.
Since gaining the rights to the story, Johnson has been hard at training at top MMA gyms, including Black House.
If you have not watched the original documentary, it is worth watching to see how far the sport has come.
Does this movie excite the newer generation of fight fans? Time will ultimately tell when the box office numbers come in.
