The star power that Conor McGregor has had since stepping inside the Octagon may never be duplicated again. Over time in the mixed martial arts world and throughout all different MMA promotions, many have tried but the recipe to being the one and only Conor McGregor has never been the same.
There are stars for sure, there is no denying that, but the question continues to be asked – is there any man or woman who can replicate the McGregor effect? Well, during a recent interview with ESPN, Sean O’Malley believes he is going to be the next star.
“I’m hoping to get another one [fight] in by the end of the year and be the biggest star in sports, not just combat sports,” Sean O’Malley told ESPN MMA during his interview. “I think I go out there and put two beautiful performances together. I will be as big as Conor (McGregor).”
Sean O’Malley is No Wannabe
With a bold statement like that, O’Malley knows that there will be haters coming after him. He has had many critics throughout his career so far, but he is on a roll with a dominate victory over former bantamweight champ Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292.
“When I say stuff like that, people [are] always like, ‘Oh, you wannabe Conor.’” Sean O’Malley tells ESPN. “He’s the biggest star in combat sports. Of course, I want to be as big as him.”
Why wouldn’t he want to be the biggest star in MMA? Look at everything that comes with it. Being a mega superstar has so many perks behind it and what seems like unlimited money rolling in that sets a person up for a lifetime. We are already seeing glimpses of a rise to super fame for Sean O’Malley with every victory he continues to rack up.
All the questions of whether Sean O’Malley can be the mega star that he believes he is will need to be answered with a huge win in his PPV headlining debut at UFC 299 against rival Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera.
Revenge Before Mega Superstardom
Revenge needs to be first on O’Malley’s list with Chito having a previous TKO win over him. The empire that he envisions for himself could only be a dream if he happens to lose his bantamweight championship in his first defence. If O’Malley can silence critics at UFC 299, the sky is the limit for the Dana White contender alum.
Do you believe that Sean O’Malley can surpass Conor McGregor and become the next mixed martial arts mega star?
