At the UFC 292 media day, Sean O’Malley revealed that he is planning to knock out champion Aljamain Sterling. O’Malley earned a title shot with a split decision win over Petr Yan back in October 2022, and is poised and ready to shock the world and take gold from Sterling in Boston.
Sean O’Malley at UFC 292 Media Day
In typical O’Malley fashion, ‘Suga’ addressed the media in a composed manner sporting sunglasses to boot. When asked about the doubters who say he doesn’t deserve the title shot, O’Malley said: “I don’t really care what people say. It doesn’t really affect me. I kind of like being the underdog, being doubted. Going into this fight I don’t have much pressure on my shoulders. He’s the bantamweight GOAT. He’s on a nine fight win streak and he’s saying I haven’t even earned this shot. How stupid will he look when I go out there and knock him out not even have earned being in that position and putting his lights out. It makes him look real stupid.”
O’Malley claimed that the title shot against Sterling will be a win-win situation for him. “I go out there and knock him out and he goes up to 45, boom. I carry on what he was doing in the division, taking people out. If he goes out there and wins and moves up to 45, I’m the last person to fight for the belt. I’m the champ either way, I like this situation. It’s a win-win for me,” he said.

‘Suga’ also expressed an interest in fighting Marlon Vera again. ‘Chito’ beat O’Malley by TKO at UFC 252. “I’m hoping Chito wins (on Saturday). Me versus Chito rematch in December, Vegas, title defence. That sounds wonderful, I love that,” O’Malley said.
O’Malley’s Star Power
The UFC bantamweight star is gaining popularity and traction by the minute with his array of technical striking skills, highlight reel knockouts and big online presence. Although he is the underdog for the fight on Saturday, the fan favourite will have a lot of support going into the bout. O’Malley described the feelings he is experiencing going into the biggest fight of his life. “I’m going to go out there and put his lights out. I’ve still got to go out there and do it. I’m 100% capable of that and that’s where I get that confidence from,” he said.
