Sean Strickland will get a chance to avenge his January loss to Dricus Du Plessis with the pair set to rematch. Talking at the post-fight press conference for last Tuesday’s Contender Series. Dana White provided an update on what’s next for UFC middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis.
Fresh of another career-defining victory, where he submitted Israel Adesanya in the fourth round. Champion Du Plessis, has teased fans with a litany of potential next bouts. A hint at a move to light heavyweight to take on the phenomenal Alex Pereira. As well as a fight against the winner of the upcoming Whittaker vs Chimaev bout.
One name Du Plessis has been adamant about not fighting next is Sean Strickland. The always-vocal American has been on the hunt for the rematch since he lost the belt in the tightly contested showdown earlier this year. Du Plessis believes Strickland is undeserving of a rematch, however, Dana White clearly feels differently.
Sean Strickland is Next For Dricus Du Plessis Says Dana White as UFC Africa Discussed
Confirming the bout but as of yet no date has been set, but with Du Plessis hailing from South Africa, the long talked about UFC Africa event seems closer than ever. Strickland has been opposed to fighting on enemy territory.
White talked about the potential event, claiming “You know how bad I want this.” continuing, “I’ve been trying to get this thing done. The arena situation is tough. It’s tough to pull off.”
“So that’s been the challenge with Africa as a whole. We’re trying to figure it out.”
Expanding further on the challenges faced with the event White said the following. “The place we would have to do it is outdoors, and you know how I feel about that. So I’ve been trying to figure out the weather,” explaining, “Wind is a big problem. We’ve done it before, but anything that could affect the outcome of the fight makes me not even want to try it.”
Despite UFC Africa being long talked about, the potential for the event still hangs in the balance. Unlike the match-up between Dricus Du Plessis and Sean Strickland, which White confirmed. Regardless of UFC Africa, the bout will go ahead.
