Sean Strickland gave his thoughts on Robert Whittaker, which has left some fans scratching their heads.
Earlier this month at UFC 290, Whittaker found himself on the wrong end of a TKO loss to Dricus Du Plessis, which was a shock upset.
Du Plessis finds himself on an eight-fight win streak dating back to 2019. The South-African native has been the underdog in more than half of his UFC bouts and has come out on top. With Brad Tavares, Darren Till, and Derek Brunson on his resume, du Plessis is now on the cusp of challenging for the middleweight title.
Meanwhile, Whittaker’s resume speaks for itself, and his last four inside the Octagon have seen him go (2-2), with wins over Kelvin Gastelum and Marvin Vettori and losing to Adesayna and ‘Stillnocks’.
Sean Strickland on Robert Whittaker
In an interview with Helen Yee, Sean Strickland weighed in on Whittaker’s performance:
“Whittaker kinda looked like sh*t, man. I think it’s kinda weird. I think everybody thought Whittaker kinda looked like sh*t. Maybe Dricus is that awkward that he made him look like sh*t. But like, Whittaker’s just this one-tricky pony. Whittaker can fight, but he is a one-tricky f**king pony.”
Strickland added:
“The moment that f**king trick doesn’t land, and now it comes down to fighting in the pocket — when it comes to doing anything else besides a karate blitz, he doesn’t really have it. He did some sh*tty shot. I think Whittaker, whenever that karate blitz wasn’t landing, he started having those f**king wheels start spinning, like, ‘Oh man, the thing that I do to everybody’s not working. What do I do now? I guess we wrestle,’ and that didn’t work… When you’re a one-trick pony and that one trick works a lot, it’s f**king great. But when it doesn’t work, it’s time to f**king do the man dance.”
Strickland is coming off back-to-back victories over Abusupyian Magomedov and Nassourdine Imavov, and is looking like the next challenger for Adesanya’s middleweight title due to du Plessis not being ready. The fight is expected to take place at UFC 293 on September 9th, in Sydney, Australia.
