Serghei Spivac earns his biggest career win as he blasts his way through at before securing an arm triangle choke in the first round at UFC Vegas 68.
The typical striker Vs grappler match-up. It was all grappler in this bout as Spivac put together takedown after takedown. Lewis had very few moments to let his hands go. As soon as Spivac landed the first trip he negated all of Lewis’ offence.
Securing a trip early in the first, he gained side control almost immediately. Using his position to attempt a scarf hold, he abandoned this and opted for strikes instead.
Derrick attempted to get to his feet but was dragged straight back down to the mat. This sequence of events repeated itself several times. Each takedown had more and more of an impact, as Lewis was pulled, pushed and thrown back to the canvas.
With Derrick’s resolve wearing thin, Spivac took his opportunity to lock in an arm triangle choke to secure the first-round submission victory.
What’s Next?
Now firmly inside the top ten after defeating Derrick Lewis who was #7. The 28-year-old Serghei Spivac is still the youngest competitor at the top end of heavyweight. Putting recent losses behind him, moving forward the future could be bright for the Moldovan.
Looking at the rankings and assuming Serghei moves to Lewis’ #7. Three men provide interesting challenges for The Polar Bear. As #5 Tai Tuivasa, #4 Curtis Blaydes and #3 Sergei Pavlovich all remain without a fight. These three options seem as good as any. Two of which he’s never faced, and he holds a win over Tuivasa.
