Terrance Crawford appears completely unfazed as well as having some choice words for Teofimo Lopez after his call out.
American Terence “Bud” Crawford the Unified Welterweight Champion of the world, has being surprisingly called out by Teofimo Lopez. Lopez not exactly known for being shy, recently called out the Pound for Pound king. Lopez told talkSPORT he will be willing to go up in weight to fight the hard-hitting southpaw. Further adding “They’re gonna get thunder and they’re going to get lightning. Put them together we’re gonna give them a sonic boom.” The fellow American certainly appears confident he can beat Crawford.
Terence Crawford Responds to Teofimo Lopez
The All-American fighter who is currently undefeated has amassed 40 wins. With 31 of them wins coming by way of knockout. Picking up world titles in no less then three different divisions, not to mention becoming undisputed champion in both the Super-Lightweight and Welterweight division. Crawford made the jump to the 147 division after unifying the 140 division, beating Australian Jeff Horn by knockout to pick up the WBO Welterweight World Title.
In 2023, a year which turned out to be a big one for the boxing world. Brought fans the long awaited and divisive fight between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. The fight which had fans and pundits alike split on who will walk away victorious. The fight itself turned out to be fairly one-sided affair with Spence Jr going to the canvas in the second round and twice in the seventh before the fight was eventually stopped in the ninth round. Although there was a rematch clause in place for both fighters, negations have appeared to have stalled between both parties leaving the potential of a rematch not looking likely.
If the rematch does not go ahead, there are plenty of options for Bud to defend his titles against. Jaron “Boots” Ennis the highly touted undefeated American with a record 31-0 with a frightening 90% knockout ratio would certainly get fans excited. Crawford could opt to regain the IBF title. Which would make him a two-time Undisputed Welterweight champ. There is a potential mega fight against the Mexican and fellow future hall of famer Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. The fight between the two Undisputed Champions would certainly gain massive attention is certainly the most lucrative fight financially out there for Crawford.
Teofimo Lopez
Teofimo Lopez (20-1) the current WBO World Super-Lightweight Champion, beat Jamaine Ortiz last night (08/02/2024) albeit in a controversial unanimous decision win. Lopez himself is multi-weight champion, holding unified belts at Lightweight following another controversial win over Vasily Lomachenko. The 140 pound fighter lost the belts in his following fight, suffering a split decision loss, to Australian George Kambosos Jr.
Lopez won the WBO welterweight championship against Scotland’s own Josh Taylor back in June 2023. This time in a much more convincing fashion.
The Likelihood?
Will we see Crawford take on Lopez in the ring? The reality is likely not. With both fighters on different trajectories and given Lopez’s lacklustre performance in his most recent outing, it is difficult to see the excitement for this fight at this stage. Especially taking when taking into consideration the much more attractive options potentially in the pipeline for Crawford.
The rumour mill began to amp up when Terence Crawford was spotted at the Lopez weigh-in for his fight last night against Ortiz. With both fighters still fighting under the Top Rank banner, it could be a feasible fight for the future. When Crawford was asked his thoughts on the call out by Teofimo Lopez. Crawford simply responded, “F*** Teo.”
