Tom Aspinall has called out Ciryl Gane over the Frenchman’s title shot claims. Aspinall returned from injury in style in July by beating Marcin Tybura, and now has his sights set on heavyweight gold. Gane has expressed his desire to fight for the title again, but Aspinall has dismissed his ambitions.
Tom Aspinall Dismisses Ciryl Gane Title Shot Claims
When speaking to TNT Sports, Aspinall said that he believes Gane’s claims for another title shot were not realistic.
“I don’t know, the guy’s acting like not the wisest move in my opinion,” said Aspinall. “Not not taking the fight against me, but his whole outlook on stuff. It’s very, it reminds me of a private school, entitled rich kid.”
Gane suggested that he deserves another shot at the heavyweight title after his latest win against Sergey Spivak in September, thereby avoiding a fight with Aspinall. The Brit went on to question the legitimacy of the claim.
“He fought for the title against Ngannou. He was the interim champion and he fought the legit champion – he lost that fight,” Aspinall continued.
“Then he came back against [Tai] Tuivasa, had an impressive win, straight back to a title fight. He fought Jon Jones, lost the Jon Jones fight really easily. He didn’t put up any resistance. You can’t then beat the number eight or nine guy and go straight back to fight Jon Jones. That’s not how it works. You’ve had two goes, you lost them both. You need to do a little bit more.”
Aspinall’s Own Claim to the Throne
After his stunning comeback win, Aspinall will be keeping a close eye on the main event of UFC 295 as Jon Jones defends his title against Stipe Miocic. He knows that he is not far from heavyweight glory, and has recently stated that he would like to take on the winner of that fight. Despite this, he insists he is ready for anyone at any time.
He added: “Right now I’m training twice a day, staying ready for anything. I’ll be ready for anyone when we can, throw me in with anybody. From here on going forward, I’m ranked number four. They’re all tough fights, give me anybody. I’m healthy, I’ve had a year off with my knee, let me fight somebody. I’ve called out all the guys who are available – what else can I do?”
