After the recent fall through of the Tommy Fury vs Jake Paul fight, now the second time. Tommy’s father has came out to have his say. John, a hugely polarising figure in the boxing world. The spotlight has been on him many times. Being the father of not only Tommy but Tyson Fury as well.
Always good for an interview, John doesn’t mince his words and tends to say exactly what he’s thinking. His most recent tirade was in relation to his sons, no longer upcoming fight and his preparations for it.
John Fury on Tommy
In an interview with boxing broadcaster DAZN, the 58-year old had this to say.
“Tommy wasn’t exactly in training,” Not what you want to be hearing from someone who’s very close to The camp, he went on to explain. ”He’d only had about 10 days because he’d been on holiday and it was a surprising thing for him. I was a way out of it doing these tours and being busy elsewhere so I never got the chance to look at it properly.”
“When I’ve paid attention, I noticed the whole thing wasn’t right anyway but I said ‘Okay, it is what it is, if you want to go over there and box him, do it. You’re experienced enough now and it’s a 50/50 platform. I know you could be fitter, you’re overweight, but it’s entirely up to yourself because I’m busy and I can’t do it.”
From someone who usually keeps such a close eye on his son’s boxing career it comes as a surprise. Especially since Tommy has stated he was ready and raring to go. Saying he was willing to fight whenever, wherever.
John Fury on Jake Paul and Tommy’s Weight
He continued on to talk about Jake and his thoughts on him. “Beating a Jake Paul is not a problem, by the way. We don’t look at him as any kind of a threat at all,” This I’m sure came as a relief to Tommy.
He finalised by mentioning Tommy and his fighting shape claiming he was currently 15kg overweight. However, he said he’d get him into shape and all would be fine. “I think he realises now that he’s got to get full time training, he needs a good eight week camp, I’ll tweak him up whenever I can when I’m home for a few days here and there during the tour. I can have a look in and see what he’s doing.”
“At the minute we’re just working on cardio and weight loss because he’s something like 105 kilos at the minute, he’s got to get right down to about 90, so he’s got a bit of work to do.”
