Bobby Green is offering an optimistic outlook on Tony Ferguson‘s upcoming UFC 296 bout against Paddy Pimblett, scheduled for December 16 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The matchup has drawn attention for the apparent disparity in the fighters’ recent career trajectories, with Ferguson enduring a six-fight losing streak and Pimblett enjoying a six-fight winning streak.
Once hailed as a formidable contender to former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, Ferguson has faced calls for retirement amid his challenging run of defeats. Notably, Green, who was Ferguson’s most recent opponent, believes that the decision to retire should ultimately be Ferguson’s choice. Green is also confident that Ferguson will make a successful comeback by securing a victory against Pimblett at UFC 296.

In a recent interview with The Schmo, Green shared his perspective, stating, “Everybody telling him to retire and stuff, he’ll retire when he wants to retire. Don’t let nobody tell you different. I fought Tony, so I know what I was dealing with in there the whole entire time. Even though I was kicking his ass, Tony was never giving up. He was never going to quit. He was never going to break, and he got that warrior spirit still. So, as long as you got that warrior spirit, go do your thing, bro. You know what I mean? And I think he’s going to beat Paddy.”
Acknowledging Ferguson’s unconventional training methods, including his current collaboration with former Navy SEAL David Goggins, Green, like many others, expressed reservations about the approach. He emphasized the importance for Ferguson to focus on refining fundamental skills rather than solely emphasizing cardio.
“I just feel like Tony needs a sick-ass guy like me who could kind of tone in his weirdness and put some basics back together,” Green explained. “Some of the basic things and he’ll be nice. But, I don’t know why he’s doing all this cardio stuff. I think he’d be dope if he just picked up some of the basics, just jab a little better, his head movement a little better. Small little things like that and he’ll be great.”
