During the press interviews for UFC 291, Tony Ferguson confirmed that his retirement is not a possibility this weekend. ‘El Cucuy’ is a fighter with twenty-six wins and eight losses. This weekend he fights Bobby Green on the main card of the UFC show in Salt Lake City.
When asked about his plans for the future, Ferguson dismissed any idea of retirement. He called his losses throughout his life ‘hiccups,’ which inspired him to ‘get his **** together.’ His overall goal however is “five fights and a title baby.“
This comes after speculation that this weekend could spell the end of the legendary fighter’s career. After being at the top of the lightweight division for some time he started to decline, currently on a five-fight losing streak. Despite this statistic, the losses have been against some of the best fighters in the UFC today. Charles Oliveira, Michael Chandler, Nate Diaz, Beneil Dariush, and Justin Gaethje are still some of the sport’s biggest names.
Tony Ferguson Isn’t Done Yet
Tony Ferguson is still one of the biggest draws in the sport, occupying a spot on a card full of some of the biggest fighters around today. His opponent, Bobby Green, holds a record of twenty-nine wins and fourteen losses. Green is currently a betting favourite, coming off of a no contest due to a clash of heads against Jared Gordon. Green also has an impressive resume, with a bout against current lightweight champion Islam Makhachev.
Despite a the run of bad form, Ferguson still believes he’s in his prime.
“I’m gonna be real with you guy. It’s always been cool, I feel at this time in my life that I’m just barely hitting my prime, which is crazy,” Ferguson said at UFC 291 media day. “One of my coaches, Juan, earlier we were doing mitts between interviews and I told him, ‘I’ve been getting up early and I just have to lay down.
The bout will occur in Salt Lake City on the UFC 291 card. This event will see Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje fighting for the BMF belt, last held by Jorge Masvidal. On top of this Alex Pereira moves up to light-heavyweight, fighting Jan Blachowicz. Other big names include Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson and Kevin Holland. The event will take place on Saturday July 29th.
