Tony Ferguson revealed he would take Nate Diaz up on his offer of training alongside him and his brother Nick Diaz in California.
Nate Diaz handed Tony Ferguson his fifth straight loss after the two squared off with one another in the UFC 279 main event. The fight was as unique as fans expected when the pair were forced to fight one another at a day’s notice. The Stockton native bagged a fourth-round submission victory in his last bout with the company, signing out in style.
Despite falling short due to a lazy takedown, Ferguson was leading the fight on one of the judges’ scorecards by eating the lead leg of Diaz, which caused the 34-fight veteran some problems. The pressure of Diaz was too much for Ferguson, who was backed up against the cage and shot for a lather laboured takedown, which marked the beginning of the event for “El Cucuy”.
It has been well documented that Ferguson is a lone wolf in the game and doesn’t really have a dedicated team. Although the TUF 13 winner spent some time in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at Jackson-Wink MMA, he is always looking to train alongside individuals that will test him before going under the bright lights.
Tony Ferguson to Train With Diaz Brothers
Following the defeat to Diaz, Ferguson revealed he would visit California to train with the Diaz brothers.
“I got the invite to their (Nate Diaz and Nick Diaz) camp,” Tony Ferguson told assembled media following UFC 279. “I’m gonna be real with you – scoop (inaudible), I got my own camp which is awesome, but I’m not gonna say no to them. Those guys are pretty f*cking cool, I mean, we run California. We do a lot for this sport, as much as we would want to fight, we have to make things right for the UFC and the contracts and stuff.”
“I wish him (Nate) nothing but the best – him and Nick, and their whole, entire crew,” Tony Ferguson explained. “They’re tough, man – and it’s cool as sh*t to be a part of that, that vibe that’s right there. Like I said, ‘El Cucuy’ is a legend, I’m not going f*cking nowhere, man.”
What do you make of Ferguson linking up with the Diaz camp? Do you think he can benefit from training in California at this stage of his career?
