Tyson Fury has beaten Francis Ngannou in a controversial split decision. The judges scored the fight 94-95, 96-93, 95-94, in favour of the British heavyweight.
Ngannou shocked the world with his performance, with many arguing that he even may have won the fight.
It was a cautious start from both men, Fury looking to use his jab, and to the surprise of many, Ngannou looked to ease his way in to the fight.
Fury received a cut to the head in the second round, from a left hook followed by what appeared to be a slight clash of heads.
The drama began in the third round as the former UFC fighter scored a knockdown. He caught Fury with a left hook sending him to the ground.
The 37 year old, who was having his first ever professional boxing fight, showed that he had the power to finish Fury if he got the chance.
The Gypsy King began to box from distance looking to win the fight through jabs, as Ngannou looked the more aggressive fighter, walking through shots, and dealing heavy blows.
Ngannou managed to do what many felt was impossible, not just survive 10 rounds, but give him chance an opportunity at victory. However with the result going to the judges scorecards, the undefeated Fury remained undefeated, with the split decision win.
Speaking after the bout Fury said: “That definitely wasn’t in the script. Francis is a hell of a fighter, strong, big puncher, and a lot better boxer than we all though he would ever be.”
“I don’t know how close it was, but I got the win and that’s what it is.” he added.
Ngannou Humble in Defeat
Francis Ngannou was humble in defeat after the decision was announced, despite many of his team feeling he had been hard done by.
He said “I’m feeling great, I’m feeling fantastic. It didn’t go my way.” “I might come out short today, I might be wounded, but I can bang.” he added.
The 37 year old believes they could have a rematch, and he will be able to get the victory.
“We can run it again, and I’m sure I’m going to get better, this was my first boxing match, great experience.” “With a little more experience next time, a little more feeling of the game, and come back even stronger.” stated the Cameroonian.
