The conversation and debate continues to unfold after one of the biggest crossover super fights at Battle of the Baddest in October. The boxing match between former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou and the reigning WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury remains a hot topic throughout the combat sports world.
When speaking with Sky Sports, Top Rank CEO Todd Du Boef did not rule out a rematch with Francis Ngannou and Fury.
“That’s an earned ability to get the rematch. He earned that,” Du Boef told Sky Sports. “His performance dictated that, ‘Woah, he has a chance. We never thought he had a chance’ and in that situation I think absolutely.”
Du Boef even had some insight on Fury’s feelings after the super fight.
“I think Tyson is regretful. He blamed himself, and he thought he had an off night. He said: ‘I took it lightly. It was all on me.’ Didn’t point fingers, which was good.”
There is no denying that Ngannou surprised the boxing world, pushing the fight with the WBC champ Tyson Fury to the distance. Many fans of both boxing and MMA were divided on whether Fury should have won the split decision.
“Ngannou outperformed anybody’s expectation and as a result of that you have all the components to say, hey, I want to see this again and that creates and warrants a rematch.”
The fight was so well received that there is an opportunity for a rematch, and with Du Boef’s comments it seems that the split decision win wasn’t enough for Tyson Fury. He might have it eat away at him enough to sign a contract for a future fight with Francis Ngannou.
Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou 2 Remains a Hot topic
The rematch with Fury would be a no-brainer match up, but we will have to wait (and who knows for how long, if ever) to see if it will come to fruition. Fury will meet the IBF, WBO and WBO heavyweight champ Oleksandr Usyk on February 17. Ngannou might not want to wait that long, but maybe the want for a rematch could give him enough time to fine tune some of his boxing and study footage from the first fight with Fury, to get his opportunity to vanquish the Gypsy King.
Who knows what will come out of Todd Du Boef’s interview? For fans who are itching for a Ngannou-Fury rematch, things look to be positive.
