WBC Heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has hit back at claims he could retire, after his fight with Oleksandr Usyk was postponed. Fury was meant to face the WBA, WBO and IBF champion Usyk in a unification bout on the 17th of February.
The fight has been postponed due to Fury suffering a cut above his eye in sparring last week, having been caught by a stray elbow after a punch thrown by Croatian sparring partner Agron Smakiki.
After the announcement was made that the fight was off, the 35-year-old received major online backlash, with Usyk’s manager Egis Klimas even calling him a coward and promoter Alex Krassyuk suggesting he should retire.
But the Gypsy King has stated he has no plans to retire from the sport any time soon in a video posted to his social media channels.
In the video he suggests that he is still looking at having two fights with Usyk, the unification and rematch that is in their contracts.
Fury also hinted at the possibility of a highly called for domestic clash with Anthony Joshua, and rematch with MMA turned boxing star Francis Ngannou.
Tyson Fury Retirement Talk
Fury said: “I keep hearing talk of people saying I should retire or I’m going to retire soon or whatever”
“I ain’t retiring anywhere, I’ve got two fights with Usyk for the undisputed twice. Then I’m going to fight AJ at least once maybe twice if he wants it after the first battering I give him.”
He added: “Then I’m going to fight Ngannou again, and that’s just a start. I ain’t going nowhere.”
Fury v Oleksandr Usyk New Date
His Excellency Turki Alalshikh has stated that the new date for the unification fight between Fury and Usyk will now be May 18th, in Rihyad, Saudi Arabia.
The decision was announced during an impromptu live stream including Fury, Usyk and Klimas, on the MMA Fighting YouTube channel.
It has been speculated that the winner of the Anthony Joshua v Francis Ngannou fight on March 8th will be in line to face the winner.
They are likely going to have to wait for the opportunity at unified glory however, with the rematch clause in place meaning that fight will likely take place in 2025.
