The moment all fans have been waiting for is the announcement of the UFC 300 main event which will top a super card in April. Interim Heavyweight king Tom Aspinall has once again teased fans on social media about a match up with Alex Pereira.
Speculation has been flying around for months on end but for many this week feels like the week for news to drop. With it being Super Bowl week every media outlet is in Vegas to get all the latest news. Some have rumoured that Dana White has secured an illustrious Super Bowl advertisement slot to announce the fight.
Tom Aspinall vs. Alex Pereria: UFC 300 Headline Options
The UFC have had limited options when it comes to the main event at the huge card that is UFC 300. Superstar Sean O’Malley is defending the month prior, Israel Adesanya was taking some time out of the octagon, Islam Makhachev will not train through Ramadan and Conor McGregor is an enigma, no one can call his next move. Even the greatest of all time Jon Jones is injured and unavailable so few options remain for the UFC. The card itself has been built brilliantly and is stacked full of former champions and title contenders from the bottom of the prelims right into the main card. However, it needs the icing on the cake and a super fight is needed to headline the momentous event.
Light heavyweight or Heavyweight?
Alex Pereira has become a fan favourite after beating four current or former UFC champions in only seven UFC fights and becoming a two weight world champion in his brief tenure at the top table of MMA. He is the outstanding candidate to headline the event out of the few remining options however his division is lacking in possible big name opponents, this is why the jump for a third belt is on the table. It would be the first time in UFC history that someone fought to become a three weight champion.
Tom Aspinall is without an opponent as the newly crowned interim champion has been avoided by Stipe Miocic for that date of April 13th. The Brit is bound to defend his interim belt while awaiting Miocic and Jones to fight at the back end of the year, the obvious and current available contender is Cyril Gane who comfortably beat Serghei Spivac in Paris last year and has not fought since. Furthermore, there is tension brewing between the pair especially with Gane originally side stepping a match up when Aspinall asking for it. Having said that it is not big enough as a UFC 300 main event. Therefore a champion vs champion bout is on the cards.
Aspinall Teases
This was the screen shot posted by Aspinall on his Instagram story, searching for flights with the infamous Easter Island head now associated to Pereira because of his stoic and stone cold expression.
Repeatedly the Brit has stated that he does not decline fights and he is always ready to say yes to any fight offered even though he is not necessarily pushing for the fight with the Light Heavyweight champion.
Tom Aspinall Alex Pereira would be a fantastic headliner to a stacked UFC 300 fight-card. Do you think it will happen? Let us know in the comments!
