Now or Never
The lightweight title is on the line at UFC 302. Islam Makhachev faces Dustin Poirier in his third defence of the crown he claimed in 2022. Poirier earned his shot after stopping the rise of Benoit St Denis with a brilliant knockout at UFC 299. The rumours swirl around this being his last fight in the UFC octagon especially as it’ll be his third shot at undisputed. Makhachev is a huge favourite bringing a dominant wrestling style which has proved successful against Poirier previously. If he chooses to stand with Poirier he runs the risk of getting clipped like he did in 2015 by Adriano Martins. Despite the odds heavily in favour of the Russian there is a sense of fate and destiny with the ‘Diamond’ and this is his chance to finish the story. Nonetheless, the task is immense and the MMA gods rarely write fairy tales.
Co-Main Event Madness
In the co-main an elite middleweight matchup between Sean Strickland and Paulo Costa, both men aim to get back to winning ways after suffering defeats earlier in the year. In the people’s main event, two of the UFC’s most colourful characters collide in a five-round co-main slot. Strickland had the best year of his career last year however started 2024 on a sour note, losing his belt via a split decision to Dricus Du Plessis in Canada at UFC 297. Costa has four fights in the last four years as consistency has escaped the Brazilian powerhouse and only one of those fights resulted in victory. However, last time out he impressed many with a great bout against long-time title challenger Robert Whittaker and this weekend presents another chance to get back towards UFC gold.
Elsewhere on UFC 302
Likewise, Kevin Holland and Michał Oleksiejczuk tasted defeat in their last fights and the main card slot is the perfect place to bounce back. Randy Brown kicks off the main card as he climbs towards the welterweight rankings after emphatically knocking out Muslim Salikhov in February. Furthermore, Heavyweights Jailton Almeida and Alexandr Romanov meet on the prelims to try and win back the MMA community due to flat UFC tenures so far. Once the fans flood the arena the fights will ignite. Unquestionably the card will throw up some unbelievable moments and some superb performances up and down the card.
