UFC 309 has been announced with it being revealed during the UFC 306 broadcast this past Saturday.
It will take place on November 16 at the famous and historic Madison Square Garden. The card itself will be headlined by Jon Jones vs Stipe Miocic for the UFC heavyweight championship. The fight was initially scheduled UFC 295 last November however would be cancelled. This was due to Jones suffering an injury so instead Tom Aspinall vs Sergei Pavlovich for the interim championship was made. This led to Aspinall becoming the interim champ and defending that belt whilst Jones recovered.
UFC 309 Announced: Jon Jones to Face Stipe Miocic in Retirement Fight
So, Jones vs Miocic will headline UFC 309 as the main event. Despite protests from fans and interim champion Aspinall the UFC decided to rebook this fight. A couple of years ago this fight would be very exciting with Miocic being closer to his prime but now not so much. Miocic is 42 with his last fight being 3 years ago where he was knocked out by Francis Ngannou. Many expect for Jones to win but Miocic may have a little something left in the tank. Whatever the result is both men likely retire after this fight.
The co-main event is Charles Olivera vs Michael Chandler in a rematch. This was announced prior to this cards announcement with Dana revealing the fight to Robbie Fox. This fight is more intriguing than the main event. The first fight was a short but very entertaining scrap and the rematch is bound to be similar. Chandler will be looking to make a statement in the division and Olivera looks to get back to winning ways.
the rest of UFC 309 is also looking solid. Bo Nickal vs Paul Craig will take place on the main card. Nickal the rising prospect and highly touted wrestler looks to break into the top 15 at middleweight. The Scottish veteran Craig looks to end his losing streak. This match up between high level wrestler and submission artist is intriguing and could end in an upset if Nickal isn’t careful.
The card also has Chris Weidman vs Eryk Anders. The old veteran Weidman managed to snap his losing streak last time out against Bruno Silva. However, the win was marred with controversy due to Weidman eye poking Silva badly. The rest of the card is yet to be announced but so far looks decent.
