UK heavyweight Tom Aspinall returns to the octagon this July for a fight against Marcin Tybura.
Despite his scheduled bout with the Polish contender, Aspinall is already talking about who he might face after Tybura.
The 30-year-old from Manchester looked on course for a title shot before suffering a serious knee injury against Curtis Blaydes.
In an interview with SPORTbible, Aspinall made his intentions for July clear:
UFC Heavyweight Tom Aspinall Eyes Next Fight
“This has got to be a massive statement win for me. I’m taking him very, very serious,” said Aspinall.
When asked about his future and a potential fight with Ciryl Gane, Aspinall replied: “Absolutely. That’s an excellent fight for me. I’d love that.”
Summing up Gane’s last fight with Jon Jones, Aspinall said that ‘Bon Gamin’ “made a couple of errors in the fight” and couldn’t come back from it.
“When you’re fighting a guy like Jones, you just can’t afford to make them kind of errors.”
Aspinall also expressed his desire to fight champion Jones, but said that winning the belt is what matters the most.
“What matters to me is being the UFC heavyweight champion. It would be really nice to fight [Jones] but I wouldn’t be too bothered if he left.”
Aspinall will not underestimate Tybura at UFC London in July, but he will need to dispatch his opponent convincingly if he is to face the likes of Gane.
A matchup with the Frenchman would be an interesting one – both men move extremely well for heavyweight fighters and carry a lot of power.
Their records are fairly similar when comparing knockouts and submissions, and they have almost the same amount of professional experience.
It would be an exciting fight for UFC fans between two of the best heavyweights in the division.
If both fighters make it back to the win column, Gane would make sense for Tom Aspinall in his next fight.
Aspinall will once again rise to be a title contender if he manages to look as devastating as he did before his injury.
