Former UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo is in the midst of a supposed government scandal involving his wife, Viviane Pereira Oliveira. Concerning allegations have been made to do with payments that they have received from the government.
According to Brazilian news outlet Extra, Oliveira’s name appeared in black and white on Portal da Transparencia, Brazil’s public finance tracking website. Allegedly they were receiving monthly deposits from May to December of 2020 totaling 4,500 reais, which equates to approximately $860. The issue is that these monthly deposits are from a fund intended for the poorest families in the country who were struggling during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Further investigation showed that Pereira hasn’t even registered under Candunico, Brazil’s platform for social programmes, resulting in her being ineligible to receive or qualify for the emergency money. Alarming news, considering the funds she has purportedly taken should have gone to those that needed it during such a difficult time.
Jose Aldo Friendly with Brazilian Government?
This isn’t the only issue the Aldo family have had with the Brazilian government recently. Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro is currently staying in a mansion in Orlando, Florida. The property is owned by Famous Family, a company which Jose and Viviane both started. Having lost the election, the far-right president fled to the United States on December 30, two days before his term ended at the beginning of January. Bolsonaro left behind a violent movement which saw his election-denying supporters storm Brazil’s presidential palace, Congress and Supreme Court.
Viviane took to social media to address the situation by posting a message to her followers on Instagram, where she denied all allegations.
“Just because we put Bolsonaro in our house, the leftists are now snooping on our life. I have never received or registered for emergency help,” she posted.
The 31-8 retired mixed martial artist Jose Aldo is yet to comment on the scandal.
