Victor Henry has his sights set on a stoppage victory at UFC Vegas 62 and is confident he has enough power to stop Raphael Assuncao.
Henry enters the bout after a successful UFC debut which saw him overcome Raoni Barcelos on short notice as a heavy underdog. After a 10-month hiatus, Henry is motivated and hungry as ever to go in and perform.
The 35-year-old spoke with Just Scrap Radio on BJPENN.com in the lead-up to his fight and weighed in on the period of inactivity:
Victor Henry Discusses Upcoming UFC Vegas 62 Bout
“I was nursing a couple of injuries that happened here and there. Not any major injuries, just through training these little things happen,” Henry said on Just Scrap Radio. “When it comes to these fights, you can’t rush. The fight I had with Barcelos was a tough fight, and I have to make sure I go in when I’m ready and can’t do things just because that is when things go bad.”
Henry knows the significance of a fight with Assuncao due to his name value and jumped at the opportunity to lock horns with the Brazilian. Despite Assuncao’s losing streak, he’s still one of the most well-respected names in the division.
“One of my old training partners, Pedro Munhoz, this was his first fight in the UFC. Pedro lost the first fight, one the second time, so now here I am about to fight him. He’s the highest-ranked guy I’ve fought,” Henry said. “Assuncao has a world of experience; he’s going to be dangerous in all aspects and although his most recent fights haven’t been his I think he will come out there with more to gain. Everyone expects him to roll over and die but I don’t think that will be the case at all. Everything he throws will be with the intent of maybe this is my last shot so I have to make it count.”
Assuncao Fighting for His Job?
Assuncao could be possibly fighting for his job at UFC Vegas 62, which makes him a dangerous opponent. Still, the American fully expect to gain a TKO victory.
“By TKO… If I had enough power to rock Raoni and almost finish him, I should have enough power to finish Assuncao,” Henry said.
Henry isn’t convinced about where a TKO victory over Assuncao puts him within the division, giving his skid, but he’s fully focussed on climbing the rankings and gaining momentum.
“It’s a low reward, high risk but these are the situations you are put in. Out of the list the UFC gave me to fight, Assuncao was the highest ranked,” Henry concluded.
