UFC 290 delivered in all aspects, being potentially one of the best cards of all time. On a night filled with multiple WTF moments and crazy upsets, one stood out above the rest. Dricus du Plessis’ performance against Robert Whittaker was one of the more shocking moments of the year. Going into the bout, Whittaker’s only losses in the last 9 years were to Israel Adesanya. That changed when he met the streaking du Plessis, who proved he’s wanted it more than anyone “The Reaper” has ever fought.
Whittaker found some early success with the striking at range, catching du Plessis with clean counters and lunging shots. As the round progressed du Plessis started to find his range and caught Whittaker multiple times before securing a takedown. From there the South African opened Whittaker up with some elbows and rained down ground and pound to end the round. With the 2nd round starting, momentum had switched to the side of du Plessis. He took that momentum and took over the fight, battering Whittaker throughout the round before dropping him with a straight right hand 2 minutes in. Dricus swarmed from there, mixing in hooks to the body and head of a battered Whittaker against the cage. Whittaker dropped back down to the floor and the referee stepped in halfway through round 2.
The win improves Dricus du Plessis to 6-0 in the UFC with 5 finishes. He secures a middleweight title shot against champion Israel Adesanya and gets the chance to silence doubters yet again.
