As the Goliath Fight Series approaches, fans eagerly await an explosive 61kg MMA title showdown between Iceland’s rising star Viktor Gunnarsson and local talent Usman. The event, taking place at Alloa Town Hall on February 8th, promises to deliver a night to remember, with Gunnarsson aiming to make a big statement on Scottish soil.
I caught up with Viktor Gunnarsson ahead of his highly anticipated title fight to discuss his preparation, future plans, and thoughts on the challenge ahead.
“I’m happy to be in Scotland, my extended family visits Scotland a lot for vacation, and they always have positive things to say when vacationing there,” Viktor shared, reflecting on his excitement about competing in a new country. This marks his first time fighting in Scotland, and it’s clear he’s embracing the opportunity to showcase his skills in front of a new crowd.
With a solid 4-1 amateur record, Gunnarsson has steadily progressed with each performance, building a reputation as a well-rounded fighter. When asked about his long-term goals, he revealed plans to transition into the professional ranks soon.
“Yes, I wanna make this my final amateur fight going forward,” Viktor confirmed. “We’ve changed up the program here in my gym, so we’re trying to compete as many times as possible this year. I wanna compete at minimum four times this year.”
Viktor Gunnarsson on MMA Title Bout
For Gunnarsson, this upcoming bout isn’t just another fight—it’s a title opportunity. But does the significance of the belt alter his mindset?
“It just got me more fired up when I heard it was a title fight,” he admitted. “Even though it’s the same fight for me, I still wanna be extra prepared so I can try and make it look easy for me out there in the cage.”
Standing between Viktor and the Goliath title is Usman, a talented and respected opponent. Viktor has done his homework and remains confident in his abilities.
“I’ve looked into Usman and his fights. He fights very solid, and he’s the perfect matchup for me right now,” he explained. “But I don’t think it’ll change anything for me as I know I can dictate wherever this fight goes. I’m simply just better and excel more everywhere than him.”
A win on February 8th would be another big step forward in Gunnarsson’s career. When asked about his plans for the rest of the year, he highlighted the importance of keeping his momentum alive and continuing his UK journey.
“The rest of the year for me seems to be more trips to the UK to keep my journey going,” he said. “I wish MMA was legalized in Iceland so we could compete here, but in the meantime, I’m happy to continue traveling to the UK and take as many dubs as possible.”
As Viktor Gunnarsson sets his sights on Goliath Fight Series gold, one thing is certain: his journey is just getting started. If he secures victory against Usman, the Icelandic prospect will have more than just a belt—he’ll have momentum and confidence to carry him toward bigger challenges in the professional ranks.
