Former Cage Warriors double champion, Mason Jones has experienced a roller coaster couple of years, inside and outside of the cage. After a full year without a fight, “The Dragon” made his return to competition in July of 2023.
With 2024 being well and truly underway, there are a lot of question marks around exactly what’s next for Jones. Here are a few possibilities that could be on the horizon for one of the country’s top talents.
Mason Jones 2023 Return
His departure from the UFC came as a tough pill to swallow for fans of the Welshman. Not to mention the uncertainty over where or when he would be fighting next. It wasn’t until terms were finally agreed in Spring last year, that we found out his next bout would be back under the lights in which he shone so bright.
Jones’ Cage Warriors homecoming came at CW 158 in Rome. A blistering first round finish of Brazilian Alexandre Ribeiro reminded everyone of exactly what they’d been missing. Not three months later he was back again.
A co-main event spot on CW 161 in Dublin. This time it was the second round in which the 28-year-old finished his opponent, Yann Liasse. After that, many have questioned what’s next and he could have some options…
Current 2024 Schedule
It’s already been announced that Jones’ next bout will be at Cage Warriors 166 in San Diego. Taking on experienced lightweight, Bryce Logan, who’s most recent victory came against Peter Queally at Bellator Dublin.
However, that isn’t the only announcement we’ve had from “The Dragon” in the past couple of weeks. It’s just been confirmed that he will also be facing-off with UFC featherweight, Nathaniel Wood at Polaris 27 for one of their superfight grappling matches.
Should he get through both of these with wins, we’d presumably be looking at a potential big announcement around the summertime. What that announcement could be is, we would imagine, down to Mason Jones himself.
What Are His Options?
A win over Logan at CW 166 could very easily secure his place in the next lightweight championship fight. However, that’s by no means a certainty and there’s always a chance he could be swayed with something else.
The former double champ told us back in July that, in his time off, he had offers from some of the biggest promotions across the world. Not only that, but there was even an opportunity to fight on the most recent series of The Ultimate Fighter, coached by Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler.
So, what’s to say that if he continues to grow his post-UFC win streak, what other offers could come through the letterbox? With the money available in the PFL and the star power potential of a UFC return, the year is looking very intriguing for Mason Jones.
