Jack Catterall avenged his only professional “loss” to Josh Taylor last Saturday in an entertaining and competitive fight. Their first bought back in 2022 saw Catterall outbox Taylor who towards the end of the fight began to figure out El Gato. That fight was for Taylor’s undisputed title and saw a highly contested decision where the judges somehow awarded Taylor the victory. Since that fateful night Catterall was set on getting his rematch and Taylor content to move on.
Jack Catterall Vs Josh Taylor
Since their first fight both men didn’t look particularly remarkable. Catterall beat Foley and a washed Jorge Linares in decent but boring fashion. Taylor since then lost a decision to Teofimo Lopez which there’s no shame in. Then eventually this year their rematch was made and displayed the best of both men. The fight saw Catterall dominate the first half of the fight and Taylor work himself into the fight in the 2nd half with many competitive rounds. Catterall was rightfully given the decision.
It was expected after their first fight that Catterall being viewed as the victor by the public would capitalise on that and pursue the world titles. But, Catterall was fixated on getting the Taylor rematch despite Josh vacating all of his titles stalling his career to fight Taylor again. Catterall now quenching his thirst for revenge can now finally move on with his career.
Potential Matchups For Catterall
The assumption now is that Catterall will finally start to pursue world title fights at 140lbs. And if he does some of those fights should be easy to make. The current WBC is Devin Haney who’s promoted by Eddie Hearn same as Catterall. Similarly, the IBF champ Subriel Matias is also promoted by Hearn. Currently both guys are booked with mandatories . But, both guys should be able to get past their mandatories.
There’s also the WBO champion Teofimo Lopez who is promoted by Bob Arum. This may prove more difficult given Arum’s explosive post fight interview after the rematch calling the scorecards a “disgrace”. So he may be reluctant to give Catterall a shot at Lopez unless it took place in America. Isaac Cruz is the WBA champ and a fight against him is possible.
All the matchups are difficult fights for Catterall particularly Matias and Lopez. Those 2 are the most dangerous particularly Matias and when Lopez is on his A-Game is a force to be reckoned with. With Cruz Catterall has a solid chance and could outskill the pressure fighter. Haney is a big question mark since the Garcia fight he took an absolute beating from Garcia and may not be the same. But given Garcia was on PEDs and missed weight the loss isn’t so bad. So now would be prime time to face Haney .
The future is interesting for Catterall and although he won’t necessarily beat the champions he can certainly throw his name into the mix.
